Kengo Akechi (明智 健悟) is a police superintendent who's Isamu Kenmochi and Tadano superior. Akechi is a rival of sorts for Kindaichi, but they both share a mutual respect for each other. Along with Kindaichi and Yoichi Takato, he's one of the very few characters to be a protagonist. Akechi is the protagonist of the spin-off Akechi Case Files and Inspector Akechi Case Files.

Description[]

Kengo Akechi is police officer in the 1st Investigative Division of the Metropolitan Police Department, with the rank of superintendent. He is 28 years old. He is a career group who graduated from the University of Tokyo Faculty of Law . He is also the youngest recipient of the Police Commissioner's Award.

His father, Shogo Akechi, was a former police officer. According to his official guide, his mother is also a police officer, and he inherited his looks and brains from her, but she hasn't appeared yet in any instalments. However, his father's personality seems to be very similar to Akechi's, and he has been told by detective Tetsuo Gondo that his behavior is exactly the same. His family seems to have been wealthy, as he attended Shuo High School, a prestigious private school, and learned various lessons such as languages and sports, who often appears in the series, he passed the entrance examination with perfect scores in all subjects and became a part of the special A class along with several of his friends like Takashi Wajima, Kaoru Yakushiji and Jiro Akazawa.

While he was in school, he was called "Shuo's Holmes", and he solved the murders that happened around him with The First Case of Young Akechi being his first succesful mystery solving. From that time on, he has fully demonstrated his various talents, and has even participated in music student concerts and fencing training camps.

By the way, his time is unknown, but he had a part-time job at a cram school when he was a student as explained in Jail Gate Cram School Murder Case, and since he sent many students to the University of Tokyo, it seems that he is now a legend as "the god of entrance exams".

Akechi seems to have had a surprisingly large number of friends in high school, and he expresses his honest emotions differently from when he was an adult.

At this point, perhaps because the fate of the 300 million yen incident hadn't happened yet, he didn't think it was a very good thing to do as a detective, saying, "I'm not suited for that kind of unrewarding, hard work.'' It seems that he had no intention of joining the police force at first.

He has a strange connection with crime producer Takato, and he made a near-miss once while he was at Shuo High School (although Takato didn't realize it). He was also friends with his mother. He later makes contact with Takato in Los Angeles, disguised as a magician named Maskman. At this time, the relationship was not yet hostile, and he showed a cooperative side, such as giving hints about the murder that occurred at the hotel.

After that, he met him again in "Magical Express Murder Case and his fate with him began, but perhaps because the atmosphere was too different, he didn't realize that he was the magician at that time.

Except for urgent situations, he is extremely polite (although he is rude) and shows a certain amount of respect to others regardless of age or gender. He basically speaks in honorifics to Kenmochi, his subordinate, and Kindaichi, who is just a high school student. Possessing a reasoning power that is second to none, in the early days, the two often fought a reasoning match.

Because he thinks so far above from ordinary people, he is criticized by his colleagues behind the scenes by those around him. The best thing about his "eccentricity" is that he continues to stand at the forefront of the investigation despite being a career group, and is producing results as a field worker. It seems that the fact that he is respected and respected by his subordinates, who are full of achievements, is not just because of his genius, but because of his attitude and achievements.

In addition, he has a variety of special skills such as violin, fencing, and chess, and even pilots and hacks passenger planes. Besides Japanese, he speaks multiple languages: English, Mandarin, Cantonese, French and German.

Defined as an overachiever, Akechi is seen as an intelligent yet prideful character who seems to consider himself superior to others, including Hajime upon their first encounter in the "Snow Yaksha Legend Murder Case". However, after Hajime pointed out his unscrupulous haughtiness which later became his fatal flaw because the real murderer of case led his investigation to the dead end. After that, both parties still hold unofficial rivalry but his attitude becomes less hostile and more playful instead. Akechi is also willing to Hajime in time of need and become his unexpected ally when difficult occurrences arise.

In the spin-off "Akechi Case Files", Akechi tends to add prideful details about himself as well as his past achievements on his backstories. He is a excellent chess player, fencer, violinist, and riddle solve (no matter how difficult the riddle really is). Kenmochi and other officers often badmouth about him behind his back. However, he does not seem to care and in fact, playfully repeats their gossip before everyone ashamedly goes back to work.

Despite his arrogant attitude, he also have some commendable behavior, such as he wouldn't tolerate impoliteness and has a strong sense of justice, as he stated even if the prime minister himself tries to stop him from uncover the truth, he wouldn't back down. Due to his prideful character, he wouldn't admit that he sometimes depends on other people. It's best shown in the last case of Inspector Akechi Case Files when confronting Gendo Fujiwara, where he purposely left his search records on order for his colleagues to follow him. This is one of his very few regrets.

Previously, he was assigned to the Los Angeles Police Department, and was in love with Patricia, who was a colleague from the LAPD (the current relationship with Akechi is unknown, as it only appears in past stories). Around that time, he participated in the World Chess Championship, and advanced to the final (the result of the final is unknown). A few years after he returned to Japan, he was promoted to superintendent after In the Name of Justice and met Hajime in Snow Yaksha Legend Murder Case (Wax Doll Castle Murder Castle in the anime version ).

He finally became the main character in the short story "Testimony Puzzle", and after that, short stories with him as the main character began to be written in the first period of the original work, and later the Short Files series became independent and became the Akechi File series. Young Akechi's Brilliant Case Files, and 4 cases after becoming a detective were released as "Superintendent Akechi's Elegant Case Files". (Many of his special skills and career with the Los Angeles Police Department, which are mentioned, are told in these works.)

After that, in "The Kindaichi Case Files R", he was again the main character in two short cases. Since it was made by edition, there are currently nine works in which he is the main character in the main volume.

At the beginning of his appearance, he always said, "In Los Angeles...". After that, there were no more depictions of him in Los Angeles, and it seemed that it had been forgotten, but in the anime series Murder at an Altitude of 10,000 Meters, the line "In Los Angeles" appeared for the first time in a long time .

In addition, in the anime version, due to the time of appearance, the unpleasant attribute is suppressed, and the part that causes the above blunder is also cut. It may also appear in episodes that do not have a turn in the original, and it is generally handled well.

Inspector Akechi Case Files[]

He is the main character in the official spin-off " Inspector Akechi's Case Files ", and as the title suggests, his activities as an inspector are depicted. He has a strong deduction ability but he also has a free-spirited side that swings around the characters around him.

The manga is drawn by Tomoo Sato, and the drawing emphasizes a more refreshing and handsome look than the main story. He is also often portrayed as having a sweet tooth, especially eating apple pie. According to Kindaichi's Instagram, he often eats apple pie even when he became superintendent. When the animated episode of this spin-off aired in 2015, he was based on Tomoo Sato's character design and brought it closer to Fumiya Sato's touch. It was completed with all 5 volumes, but the end is connected to Snow Yaksha Legend Murder Case.

In the last case, the story of how he was promoted from inspector to superintendent, and how he became a twisted personality (so-called sad villain ) is also depicted.

It seems that it was impossible to completely connect with Akechi before the change of direction of the character. Or, can it be taken that the blunder in "The Legend of Yukiyasha" has moderately softened the stubborn nose or the closed heart. Not only Kindaichi, who is probably the first equal rival in his life, but also the real criminal, Snow Yaksha, who made him dance in the palm of his hand (even though the crime is not forgiven) It may be said that it is a kind of "benefactor". In the anime version, when he first appeared, he didn't act like the original, and his subordinate, Ryutaro Kobayashi, wasn't demoted, and he still interacts with Akechi, so that kind of thing has disappeared or is safe.

Appearance[]

He has silver hair, glasses, and is usually seen wearing a light yellow coat over a light blue shirt and matching pants. He is tall and considered fairly attractive. During his years in high school and university, he is popular amongst both girls and guys.

From New Series onwards, his hair is considerably drawn to be messier than his previous appearances.
